7- Day Lemosho Route

OVERVIEW

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and successful routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a longer and more gradual ascent ideal for acclimatization. Typically completed in 7 to 8 days (8 recommended), it starts on the western side of the mountain and merges with the Machame Route at Shira Camp. Covering approximately 70 km, it passes through diverse landscapes — from rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and glacier zones. The route is quieter at the beginning, making it a great choice for those seeking a more remote and peaceful experience. Though slightly more expensive and physically demanding due to its length, the Lemosho Route boasts one of the highest summit success rates and is favored for its breathtaking scenery and gradual climb profile.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp

Start at Londorossi Gate (2,100 m) and trek through lush rainforest to Big Tree Camp (2,700 m). This is a gentle introduction to the mountain with beautiful vegetation.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Cross the rainforest and climb onto the Shira Plateau, reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m). The landscape opens to wide moorland and rocky terrain.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

A shorter day hiking across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m), allowing time to rest and acclimatize.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630 m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). This “climb high, sleep low” day helps your body adjust to altitude.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall and then continue across valleys to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). The trek is scenic and moderately challenging.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Trek to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base for your summit attempt. The terrain is rocky and exposed with spectacular views.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Begin the summit climb around midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) by sunrise. After celebrating, descend to Mweka Camp (3,100 m).

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 m), where you exit the park and receive your summit certificate.
