Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The trek begins at Machame Gate (1,800 m) with a steady ascent through lush rainforest. This is one of the wettest sections of the route, with rich vegetation and possibly muddy trails. After 5–7 hours of hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp (3,000 m), where you spend your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs steeply into the moorland zone. The landscape opens up, offering views of nearby peaks and the Shira Plateau. The hike takes around 4–6 hours, ending at Shira Camp (3,840 m), set on a high, breezy plateau.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
This important acclimatization day involves a climb to Lava Tower (4,630 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). The day helps your body adjust to the altitude through the “climb high, sleep low” strategy. The trek lasts about 6–8 hours and passes through alpine desert terrain.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
One of the most exciting sections, this day starts with a scramble up the Barranco Wall—a steep but non-technical climb. After reaching the top, the trail continues through undulating terrain to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). The hike takes around 4–5 hours.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A short and gradual climb leads to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The route crosses a barren alpine desert with minimal vegetation. The trek takes 3–4 hours, giving you plenty of time to rest before the early morning summit push.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Summit day begins around midnight with a long, steep ascent to Stella Point, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you begin a long descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m), passing back through the alpine and moorland zones. Expect 12–16 hours of hiking in total.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final descent takes 3–4 hours through rainforest, ending at Mweka Gate (1,640 m), where you sign out and receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will be waiting to return you to your hotel or lodge.
